Community Engagement is a planned process with the specific purpose of working with identified groups of people, whether they are connected by geographic location, or affiliation or identify to address issues affecting their well-being. Planners and stakeholders sit together to have their opinion discuss the problems of our city and how to improve it.
The benefits of community engagement are:
- Increases in knowledge and identity
- Share opinion and information
- Lowering transaction costs
- Balance the conflicting priorities
There is a good example for community engagement in ACT. It is ACT homelessness Strategy
Breaking the cycle – the ACT Homelessness Strategy has been developed and will be implemented in a manner that is consistent with the overarching principles established by the Compact between the community sector and the ACT Government.
The Compact provides a positive basis for partnership and constructive working relationships between the community sector and government. Key principles that guide the Compact and underpin how government and the community sector will work to implement the strategy are:
n Trust, openness and transparency of communication and processes;
n Mutual respect for the capacity and capabilities of each sector, and recognition of their limitations;
n Valuing of the distinct and complementary role each sector plays;
n Respect for diversity and independence of community organisations and groups;
n Integrity, ethical practice, accountability and leadership in the way each sector operates;
n Taking responsibility in the relationship and being accountable for the process and outcomes;
